Spice Yorkshire enjoy the Gyrocopter Experience PDF Print E-mail

ImageOn Saturday 9th March 2008 Steve, Michael, Elaine and Anthony were the first members of Spice Yorkshire to fly with the Gyrocopter Experience.

It was beautiful blue skies with a brisk breeze when the four Spice members arrived at Rufforth airfield on the outskirts of York at 9am for their morning flight.  They were met by Kati, the Gyrocopter Experience event coordinator, and after a quick coffee and a chat, everyone was kitted out with their matching "The Gyrocopter Experience" flying suits ready for their group photograph and their safety briefing.  For each of them, this was the first time they would sit in a Gyrocopter, and today they would all get the chance to be a trainee pilot.

Steve was first to take to the skies, and after about 10 minutes of getting accustomed to the Gyrocopter he took the controls, using the "cyclic stick" to follow 700ft above the A64 ringroad around York.

When Michael went for his flight he asked if he could fly close to his grandsons house at Copmanthorpe as it was closeby; Phil, the instructor happily obliged with a slight detour from the normal route.

Elaine was third up and talked excitedly throughout the whole experience.  This was the first time she had ever flown in anything apart from a large jet when going on holiday and was completely "on a high".  Anthony was the last member to fly and was "hands on the controls" for over half the flight and a very competent budding pilot.

All in all it was a great day, it had been postponed twice previously due to the bad weather conditions earlier in the year, but everyone agreed "It was worth the wait".

Spice Yorkshire is a social and activity group.  It is known as the adventure group for ordinary people who want to do extra-ordinary things.  For further details please visit www.spiceyorks.com
