Hi Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2013 Gyrocopter Experience Newsletter with gyrocopter news, updates and information from the UK and around the world. |
Video of The Flying Show 2012
Phil Harwood starred in the Flyer Magazine video of The Flying Show at the
NEC. In spite of many dire predictions from fellow instructors, the camera lens didn't shatter and Phil gave a great impromptu interview about gyrocopters in the UK. If you want a clue about the popularity of gyros then just take a look at the number of people buzzing around the gyro village compared with the other stands shown in the film. First Magni VIP Owner in the UK
|
Phil Smart took delivery of the first Magni M24 VIP to be available in the UK a couple of days ago. He was absolutely bowled over with the aircraft's performance when he flew with Phil Harwood and achieved a constant climb rate of 900fpm on climb out. Not bad for two 'good sized' blokes and 40 litres of fuel. You may have seen Phil's M24 G-MAGN when it was on display at The Flying Show at the NEC last December, fully equipped with the 'VIP' Executive style interior and the new mast fairing. Phil has had his Gyro licence for a number of years having trained at York. He was the proud owner of an MT03 Gyroplane, but made the decision to swap from open cockpit flying to the luxury of enclosed cockpit flying. Phil managed to get a few hours of flying in over the weekend before reluctantly heading back to Brussels where he works. He will have to wait 4 weeks before he can get his hands on his 'new baby' again! |
Winter Flying - Open for Business
Two locations: Salisbury and Devon are fully open for business this January. The weather has been kind so far and both locations are off to a flying start - literally! Steve, who had his first fight on the 2nd of January, can be contacted on 07905 059789 and Nick can be contacted on 07734 055791. So where is everyone else? Phil Harwood (York) is running groundschool courses for PPL(G) students and new Instructors as announced in last months newsletter. Kevin Robinson (Oxford and Algarve) is currently training students in Kenya who have recently bought a Magni M24 to fly over the Masai Mara game reserve. Kevin Whitehead (Perth) is currently out of the country until mid February enjoying a well earned break. |
First PPL(G) in 2013
Claire Taylor became the first person in 2013 to sit her General Flying Test (GFT) to complete her training in Gyrocopters and successfully obtain her PPL(G). Claire actually started her training in 2009 and flew solo on the MT03. Like a lot of people - 'life' got in the way and she didn't have time to finish her training. She started again in 2012 and this time preferred the enclosed cockpit gyro - the M24 Orion. Claire hoped to finish at the end of last year but the weather meant that her test had to be postponed a number of times. Claire is absolutely delighted. It was worth the wait. Well done Claire - We're proud of you! |
Gyrocopter Experience statistics for 2012
In 2012, the Gyrocopter Experience flew 1795 hours with a total of 394 different people. Eleven students passed their GFT and obtained their PPL(G) licence. Fourteen people flew their first solo and 483 people subscribed to the website from 13 countries. Enthusiasm for Gyrocopters just continues to grow and grow! |
