LATEST NEWS 2014- THE CALIDUS IS HERE!!!!

What's special about us?

The Calidus is here!

Devon is one of two locations in the UK where you can learn to fly gyros in a Cavalon, a Calidus or a MT! For more information see the section ‘Introductory Flights’.

Beaches, Cliffs, Rivers, Dartmoor, Exmoor, The Jurassic Coast: all are within reach of The Gyrocopter Experience Devon. Is this the most scenic location in the UK for flying gyros? Possibly!

Unless you’re lucky enough to live next to one of the few locations in the UK where there is full time gyro instruction then you’re probably looking at a full time intensive course. If so why not come to the beautiful South West. Complete your training in some truly breathtaking scenery.

Operating from a private airstrip within a few minutes drive of Sidmouth, Honition & Lyme Regis, the training facility offers great flexibility. Exeter Airport, just a 5 minute flight away, is a very central South West base, offering circuits for those training to PPLG. Pilots may also enjoy visiting some of the many other local airstrips in the area, adding variety to the training within the syllabus.

Introductory Flights

Like to try the Calidus or Cavalon out? Find out if they are as good as they look? How they compare to other gyros? Why not book a full day.

A typical full day introduction to the Calidus or Cavlon is tailored to your requirements. It could start with a thorough inspection, then a brief on general handling, followed by a General Handling flight. Then a de-brief, (cup of tea) and briefing on the next flight. Perhaps that would be take offs and landings. Fly that exercise, then de-brief. Then on to the next flight, maybe vertical descents or unusual attitudes; or, if the weather’s suitable, flying with the doors off! A full day includes daily inspection, briefing/de-briefing, two or three flights to total 2 hours 30 minutes. Additional flight time available, if required, at normal training rate.

Whether you’re a 20,000 hour commercial pilot, a PPL(A) or someone who just wants to enjoy the view; when you come for your first flight in one of these fantastic machines we try and tailor the flight to your requirements.

How it works!

If you would like to buy someone a gift of a flight, buying a Gyrocopter Experience Giftpack with flight voucher is the easiest way to proceed. The person receiving the gift can then book a specific time and date at a later stage. If you already have a voucher and would like to book a time and a date Redeem your voucher here

Alternatively if you want to book a date and time now then you can Book Direct Here. Go on...treat yourself...you wont regret it!

Gyrocopter Pilot Training

Intensive Training Courses

The Gyrocopter Experience offers intensive 4 or 5 day training courses for student pilots.  Courses cater for students wanting to train for a Private Pilot's Licence for Gyroplanes or PPL(G) in addition to advanced flying training for existing pilots. Training courses are held during the week. We have a maximum of two students on each intensive training week. Students take it in turns to fly and depending on their stage of training, may share briefings.

You can expect to fly an average of two and a half hours each day. It might not sound that much, but learning to fly is very absorbing and intense and it takes a while for your brain to assimilate what you’ve been taught. We discourage students from booking intensive training weeks back to back – it isn’t the most productive way to learn as you need time to fully understand and absorb everything you’ve learned. The optimum gap between training weeks is probably between one and four weeks, however we do have a number of students who are learning to fly over a couple of years and have longer gaps between each intensive week.

Think of it as a holiday!

We fully understand and respect that you will probably use valuable vacation time in learning to fly and we make every effort to fly despite sometimes less than ideal weather conditions. We will sometimes rearrange the order that things get taught in an effort to make the best use of the varying British weather conditions. In the event that flying is not possible, we try to switch our attention to the various ground school topics in order to ensure that time isn’t wasted.

We have had great feedback regarding learning on these intensive courses as opposed to training an hour here or there spread across a long period. It is often helpful to remove yourself from your normal everyday life and fully immerse yourself in flying training. Many of our students stay locally and maximise the time they spend at the airfield with their attention fully focused on learning to fly.
